Medical Ultrasonics Laboratory (MEDUSA)
Sound provides unconventional means to manipulate human tissue on microscopic and macroscopic levels. When intended, ultrasonic exposures generating sonic force fields can be applied from a distance, e.g. through the skin, in a non-destructive manner. The goal of MEDUSA is to discover and develop new platform technologies exploiting non-linear ultrasonics for conducting therapeutic or diagnostic tasks. A strong incentive exists to translate these research technologies to the clinic. Our recent research interests include e.g. ultrasonic drug delivery for osteoarthritis therapy and ultrasound-enhanced cancer diagnostics. The laboratory is headed by Asst. Prof. Heikki Nieminen.
