Full version

1) Groups division for hands-on sessions on May 17:

> Take a look at the PDF file sent by e-mail, containing the division of the participants in groups, and the instructions to the meeting points with a link to Google Maps.

> The contact persons will be waiting for you in the meeting point and guide you to the correspondent laboratory in the scheduled time (12:30 and 15:30), so please arrive at least 10 minutes before.

> Meeting point of Groups 1 A and B: Otakaari 5I, Espoo (AMI-centre in Google Maps), Victor Souza and Mikko Nyrhinen will meet you outside the building. The building is located in the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University, and the easiest way to get there is by metro leaving from the stations close to Helsinki city center (Kamppi or Rautatientori (Central railway station); about 15 min)

> Meeting point of Groups 2 A and B: Haartmaninkatu 4, Helsinki (Meilahti Tower Hospital), Aino Tervo and Jaakko Nieminen will meet you inside the lobby of the main tower in the hospital area. Several buses and trams stops nearby the Meilahti Hospital, which is close to the city center (about 15 min).

> Follow the links in the PDF and it will be easy to find, but if you have any problems, just call or text us and we will help you.

2) Meeting point on May 18:

> A shuttle bus will take us to the course venue (Solvalla) from Aalto University campus (in Otaniemi area in the city of Espoo). Therefore, we will meet in front of the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE). Google Maps directions lead correctly to the place we should meet.

Meeting address: Otakaari 3 (Health Technology House).

> Everybody should be at the meeting point at 8.45 am. The bus will leave at 9.00 am sharp.

> If you want, do some grocery shopping in advance, e.g., snacks/drinks. Note that all meals during the week are included in the participation fee.

> Aino Tervo (aino.tervo [at] aalto [dot] fi; +358 50 453 0082) will have a name list of those who are going to take the shuttle bus. Please let us know immediately if you are not taking the bus, so we will not wait for you unnecessarily.

3) Pre-reading articles can be found from the course website at:

> Download the material for the Science Factory at:
http://nbe.aalto.fi/en/studies/other/6th_science_factory/programme/

> The password for opening the files was sent by e-mail in the Item 3.

> Please browse through the articles to familiarize with the topics presented during the event, especially those that are relevant to your Team tasks (see item 6 below, and attached PDF with Teams and Tasks). There will be sufficient free- and sleep-time during the course only if you prepare yourself beforehand ;).

4) Micro-posters and scientific posters:

> The micro-poster and scientific poster have different purposes.

> The micro-poster is the figure you sent with the questionnaire and it will be attached to your nametag (badge). With the micro-poster, it should be easier for you to explain your research activities when talking to someone at any place during the event.

> The scientific poster is the regular poster you present in a scientific conference. You are free to bring posters from previous work on brain/neurophysiology, and it’s also possible that you make your scientific poster about the project you are about to start on TMS–EEG, thus you may get comments from the participants and teachers.

> We have no strict restrictions on scientific poster sizes, but preferably, the posters should not exceed A0 size. Posters will stay hanged through the whole event.

> Bring your printed poster with you. We will depart early on Friday (09.00 am), so we recommend not sending posters to be printed in Helsinki or Espoo with pick up set to Friday. There will be not enough time.

> There are two slots in the programme for the scientific posters presentations (Saturday and Sunday). On Saturday, participants from Teams 1 – 5, and on Sunday, participants from Teams 6 – 10, will present their work.

5) Concept tours:

> The concept tours are presentations of basic concepts in TMS, neurophysiology and physics to small groups of participants, running in parallel sessions, and lead by a teacher.

> This session is organized to encourage more interaction between participants and teachers, and we strongly recommend you to ask questions and try to clarify cloudy concepts that have been hunting you.

6) Teams and tasks (participants will be divided in teams):

> Paper summary:

This should be done before the Science Factory. Write 1 sentence to summarize 5 papers from the material provided in our website. We might ask you randomly during the event to share with us your sentence, if you want. =) There is no need to read all the papers we provide, but it’s good to get in touch with the topics that will be discussed.

> Chair session:
The team will “chair” a lecture given by a coach/teacher. The chair activity takes place during the corresponding lecture, so the team should prepare themselves in advance. During the event the coaches and assistant coaches will help the participants throughout the activities. The focus of the session is based on the actual lecture, but please use the pre-reading articles for preparations. The team is expected to introduce, prepare questions and handle the discussion with the audience. The lecture session has a time-slot of 75 min in the program.

> 24/7 presentations:
On Tuesday morning each participant will give a super-brief summary (a ‘pitch’) of one of the teaching sessions. Super-brief means a 1-slide summary in 24 seconds, plus 1 extra slide that contains a 7-word sentence that summarizes the lecture, or at least a key point of it. Each participant will give their own 24/7 presentation, and participants in the same team have the same target lecture. Therefore, the presentations of one team will ideally form a nice unity. The 24/7 presentations will be an entertaining small competition between the teams and between the participants, which nicely wraps up the content of the intensive week.

> There will be time to prepare the tasks with your team and your coach will help you.

7) The Signal Analysis hands-on session on May 23 (Wednesday):

> The session will take place in Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo, close to the address where the bus departs on Friday. The meeting point and instructions will be given during the Science Factory.

> On May 22 you will be accommodated in a nearby hotel in Espoo (included in the participation fee) just next to the campus, and the place where the data analysis workshop will be held.

> Sergei Tugin is the responsible person for organizing the data analysis workshop and may be contacted in case you have any questions. He will send you an e-mail with instructions and material before the workshop.

> On Wednesday (May 23) we will have lunch at a restaurant in the Aalto University campus, near the building of the data analysis workshop, and is included in the registration fee.

8) Accommodation:

> Please, if necessary, organize your accommodation for May 17 (Thursday to Friday) and/or May 23 (Wednesday to Thursday).
> The participation fee covers 5 nights of accommodation, Friday to Wednesday (May 18 to 22).
> For instance, Radisson Blu Hotel in Otaranta, Espoo, is very close to the meeting point. Also, the Aalto University campus is easily reachable if you stay in Helsinki city. There is a subway line connecting the Helsinki city center to Aalto University, with trains running every 5 minutes (see Topic 9).

9) Public transport

> Google Maps or Journey Planner are a good way to get a grip of the public transport in the Helsinki/Espoo district [http://www.reittiopas.fi/en/].
> For reference, there is a subway station in Kamppi (central mall in Helsinki) that connects to the Aalto University station in Otaniemi area, Espoo. One-way ticket costs € 5.50.

10) Miscellaneous:

> We recommend that the participants will be granted 3 ECTS credits for the poster presentation and works related to the course. After the Science Factory, we will provide a certificate, upon request, that can be used to apply for the credits in your doctoral or master program.
> Take a look at this link about the place we are staying during the Science Factory, it is a beautiful national park (https://feelthenature.fi/en/category/trips-to-nuuksio-national-park/summer-and-autumn-in-nuuksio-national-park/). Be aware that even though we are in the capital area, the hotel is located inside the park without any commercial area (e.g. grocery shops) nearby and it's about 50 min by bus to Helsinki center. In addition, our schedule for the participants during the week is quite busy. Buying groceries, drinks, cigarettes and others will not be possible during the week. Although we provide all the necessary meals, you should think about bringing any extra things you would like to have during the week.
> We will have many Sauna sessions; it is one of greatest Finnish traditions, so remember to bring your swimsuits your own towel. Note: there are towels and bedlinen in the rooms, naturally.
> It is also possible to do short hikes in some trails close to Solvalla, play football and other sports. In case you are interested, you can bring proper clothes and shoes.

> Bringing your laptop is strongly recommended to help you preparing the activities. Don’t forget power adaptors if needed.

> The spring in Finland may be cold or warm (more likely to be cold!), so please follow the weather forecast just before packing. We will have several outdoor activities and a beautiful nature around us, so pack accordingly.

> There are no extremely poisonous animals/insects in Finland, but please be aware of ticks, wasps, and vipers.

> We will have the meals in Haltia restaurant during Fri-Tue (https://www.haltia.com/en/restaurant/lunch/). It is part of the Finnish Centre of Nature, check the website for the whole story: https://www.haltia.com/en/haltia-the-finnish-nature-centre/.
